  • Overview

    Performs a variety of skilled work in the fabrication, installation, and maintenance of ventilation, air conditioning, and heating systems. Maintains efficient operation of CCAA’s environmental control systems for heating, air conditioning and handling, and refrigeration. The HVAC Specialist is the second level position in the maintenance series, requiring formal training and experience in HVAC, low voltage controls, mechanical systems, and computer-aided/networked system controls.


    1. Maintains air handlers at optimal levels. Tightens, adjusts, repairs, replaces, and calibrates boilers, cooling towers, variable frequency drives, motor control contactors, pumps, etc. Monitor and operate on chillers.
    2. Fabricates, and installs ductwork, airflow systems, condensers, refrigeration to accommodate new and existing building and equipment requirements at all sites. Removes old equipment and refrigerants according to applicable laws and safety standards.
    3. Performs a variety of electrical repair and maintenance duties. Installs, adjusts, repairs, or replaces, motors, heaters, transformers, dampers and other electrical apparatus. Operates electrical equipment.
    4. Tests, adjusts and calibrates heating and air conditioning machinery and mechanical, electrical, and digital control instruments.
    5. Operates, maintains, inspects and repairs heating, air conditioning refrigeration, water treatment, co-generation, heat reclamation, thermal energy storage, ventilation, and air compressor equipment used with HVAC.
    6. Performs preventive maintenance on high voltage switch gear, as it relates to HVAC or related equipment.
    7. Responds to reports of heating or cooling problems, suspicious odors, electrical problems, refrigeration problems, and other urgent situations. Maintains, inspects, diagnoses and makes emergency repairs to natural gas, water, refrigeration, and air distribution systems.
    8. Programs, monitors, and schedules multiple computerized energy management systems at various sites.
    9. Performs other duties as assigned to meet overall objective of the position and in support of the CCAA Mission.




    The position requires a maintenance level of knowledge of the principles, practices, methods, techniques, materials, tools, equipment, layouts and set-ups used in HVAC systems and operations. Requires maintenance level of knowledge of electronics, including microprocessor operation, and digital controls. Requires working knowledge of energy management and conservation systems, including remote computer-aided access. Requires a basic knowledge of construction, carpentry, electrical, and plumbing concepts, practices, and techniques. Requires a general knowledge of the uses and purposes of general maintenance, hand and power tools and equipment. Requires knowledge of pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations in area of specialization. Requires sufficient math skills to record and compute detailed measurements and calculate load factors. Requires sufficient human relations skills to convey technical information to others and respond to customer requests.




    Requires the ability to perform all of the essential duties in the area of specialization at the mid or maintenance level operating under general supervision. Requires the ability to use and maintain all of the tools, equipment, vehicles used during routine performance of duties. Requires the assist in the scheduling of maintenance and system operations to maximize energy efficiency while responding to the needs of customers. Must be able to understand and follow oral and written instructions, maintain routine records and interpret plans and specifications found in area of specialization. Must be able to obtain cooperation of and maintain harmonious relations with the employees in other departments contacted during routine performance of duties.




    Incumbent must be able to maintain cardiopulmonary fitness, function indoors in a shop environment and/or outdoors in the field engaged in work of primarily an active nature. Ambulatory ability to walk and carry tools and apparatus for 400 yards. Sufficient strength and agility to lift 50 pounds, load, and move heavy weight materials up to 75 pounds. Requires the ability to bend, stoop, and work in awkward positions. Visual acuity to read and observe diagrams, manuals, work conditions, and recognize color-coded wires and connections.
    Auditory ability to carry on conversations in person and with communications devices.




    Work is performed indoors and outdoors where significant health and safety considerations exist from physical labor and handling of materials.





    The position typically requires a high school diploma and 2-4 years’ experience in HVAC work.




    Requires a valid Driver’s License. Requires appropriate federal certification in area of specialization for handling and recycling of refrigerants




    $18.90 - $22.50 is commensurate with certification and experience
